Learn about the Third Eye Chakra

Third Eye Chakra

The Third Eye Chakra is the sixth chakra. It is the second of the higher or upper chakras corresponding to the middle of the spiritual body. Its center is located frontally just above and between the eyes, at the center of the eyebrows; and at the first cervical vertebrae at the base of the skull in the back of the body.

In Sanskrit, it is called “Ajna,” which means command or monitoring center. In Eastern Yogic traditions, there are ninety-six petals to the center’s wheel - this is a large vibratory jump from the sixteen seen in the Throat chakra. It is also known as the guru chakra as it is the point where the three main nadis or forces, ida, pingala, and sushumna, meet and merge into one stream of consciousness before flowing up to the Crown chakra. In this point of unification, we move beyond the polarities of light and darkness and into the space where we can perceive the infinite.

The Third Eye Chakra is the seat of intuition and knowing, clairvoyance, and telepathic communication. In many esoteric traditions, opening the sixth chakra leads to a highly meditative state, often known as “samadhi.” This state, which is difficult to describe, is associated with an experience of being one with the universe and perfectly in tune with the present moment. Developing the Third Eye supports an awakening of psychic skills including one’s ability to see auras and energetic information. It is the space where conscious and unconscious knowledge and perception meet; and one’s ability to embrace the bigger picture of life is embodied.

The Third Eye Chakra offers you the space you need to perceive the seen and unseen. When this chakra is open and balanced, we are more able to command our lives. As we begin to “see” with clarity, we are able to move with greater intention and align ourselves with the higher vibrations of the universe.

Balance & Imbalance: If your third eye chakra is imbalanced, you may notice that you experience some of the following symptoms:

  • Anxiety

  • Lack of concentration

  • Depression

  • Eye issues

  • Headaches and migraines

  • Auditory issues or ringing in the ears

  • Sinus problems

  • Difficulty setting and attaining goals

  • Lack of clarity around soul purpose

  • Not trusting one’s own perception or inner guidance

The Third Eye chakra opens the doors of the mind to intuition, imagination, and enhanced perception, sometimes known as “sixth sense.”

An Open and balanced Third Eye will be embodied in the following ways:

  • Clarity of thought and vision

  • Sense of direction and soul purpose

  • Strong sense of intuition and knowing

  • Self-confidence particularly around intuition and trusting inner wisdom

  • Deep sense of inner peace

  • Ability to be empathic and yet grounded in one’s own energy

  • Access to the dream state

  • Open to telepathic and psychic messages

Are you ready to care for & nurture your Throat Chakra?

Like the other chakras, you can balance the throat chakra through meditation, crystals, food, essential oils, and affirmations. Here are some other suggestions to balance the throat chakra:

Meditation

  • Start by grounding yourself to mother earth and connecting with Spirit above in whatever way you feel called to.

  • You may wish to be seated or lying down. Bring your attention to your Third Eye chakra.

  • If you’d like, put a drop of essential oil on your Third Eye, or if lying down, place one of the corresponding chakra crystals on the Third Eye to help stimulate it.

  • Begin working with the sound OM. On the in-breath, breathe OOO into the front of the Third Eye at the brow center and bring it to the back of the head at the base of the skull; on the out-breath complete with MMM as you bring the breath back through the head and out the brow center at the front.

  • Move the breath in and out with each cycle of OM. You can also chant OM aloud if you wish as the vibration can also help support this chakra.

  • You may also visualize an indigo or purple ray of light flowing with the breath and sound in and out.

  • Continue to practice for 3 - 5 minutes or as long as you feel to.

  • Due to its high vibration, it is suggested to practice for shorter increments when first working with the Third Eye chakra and then increase as you begin to feel more balanced in that area.

Keep a dream journal - as soon as you wake up jot down any reflections of your dreams and see what you can learn from your unconscious
Embrace the color indigo or purple - wear clothing, light a candle, add flowers to your home of these colors, carry or wear crystals or stones to stimulate the third eye

Read spiritual books and journal about your experiences working with intuition and psychic exploration. Begin to chart what you learn about your own inner guidance system.  Also, notice signs that you are in or out of balance in this area.
