Five Fundamental Feng Shui Facts

Have you ever wondered if there is anything to this “Feng Shui” thing? As a Feng Shui practitioner for almost 20 years, I can tell you there absolutely is. To rephrase an old commercial, not only am I a Feng Shui Professional, I am also a client.

Feng Shui is all about the energy (Chi) of a space, how it flows, how it feels, and how it functions. Is it balanced, peaceful, and functional?

Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese art and science primarily concerned with the harmonious flow of energy and how this energy affects those who live or work in the environment. I like to think of it as a type of healing modality.

The following is a basic introduction to Feng Shui. In future blogs, I will discuss various situations where feng shui can be utilized as well as stories where I discuss actual clients and the situations that were improved by using Feng Shui.

5 Fundamental Facts You’ll Want to Know About Feng Shui

1 Feng Shui literally translates to the words wind (feng) and water (shui).

Wind is the natural movement of air and water flows. This ancient Chinese art of placement is concerned with the movement and flow of ch’i, also known as energy, to balance, enhance, and uplift an environment such as a home, office, or landscape.

2 There are many different schools, or methods, of feng shui.

Though there are many different schools, or methods, of feng shui, they all have the same goal and outcome of creating harmonious environments. The Feng Shui school I practice is called Black Hat, shortened from the original Black Tibetan Tantric Buddhist or BTTB. Black Hat Feng Shui is a westernized form of feng shui created by Professor Lin Yun. Its philosophy is practical, physical, and spiritual.

3 Feng Shui uses a map of your home, called a Bagua.

The Bagua consists of nine categories or life situations. These categories are spatially represented by areas in your home. Each area is called a “gua”.

The nine areas/categories are:

  • Abundance & Wealth

  • Fame & Reputation

  • Love & Relationships

  • Health & Family

  • Spirituality & Wellness

  • Children & Creativity

  • Skills & Knowledge

  • Career & Life Path

  • Helpful People & Travel.

4 There is no situation that feng shui won’t help.

In Black Hat Feng Shui, there are energy solutions or cures for everything. Cures are proven energy solutions, remedies, and enhancements that restore balance in your home by adding, removing, or moving physical objects or spiritual/transcendental energy. To activate and improve the energy in a space, practitioners choose the best and most appropriate cures such as utilizing :

  • light-refracting objects including mirrors, lights, and crystals

  • sound objects such as chimes or bells

  • living things

  • colors

  • electrical objects

  • heavy objects

  • moving objects/water features

  • symbolic items

  • transcendental remedies.

5 Nine is an auspicious number in feng shui.

Perhaps you noticed that there are nine “guas” and nine “cures”? Nine is considered a lucky number in China because its pronunciation sounds like the Chinese word for long-lasting. Also, in numerology 9 is the number of completion, endings, and wholeness. If you want to change something in your life, say an affirmation nine times. If you are decluttering, eliminate 9 things (or multiples of 9, such as 18, 27, 36). Who knows, maybe even the Beatles practiced feng shui - I am of course referring to the song No.9 from their White Album. Their success would certainly indicate that they had some lucky ch’i on their side!

Balanced and harmonious energy in a home or any physical environment allows for positive opportunities to flow into our lives, as well as for peace and joy to enter our closest relationships.

Whether you’re looking to improve your love life, your home life, your career, or your physical self, arranging your personal space according to Feng Shui principles supports opportunities for success.
