Climbing Ladders

A few months ago, I made a promise to connect with my Higher Self, my Soul’s Voice, every day. Whether it’s for five minutes or an hour, it doesn’t matter. I just need to connect. I do this not to look into the future, but to truly know who I am. I want to know myself better. I want to be my own best friend, and I want to spend the rest of my days in close contact with the deepest part of my heart. When I listen to my Soul’s voice, I am in alignment; I feel safe and balanced.

This week, my Soul’s Voice spoke loudly.  I’m certain it will resonate with some of you. The vision is a metaphorical story about the ladders I’ve spent most of my life climbing, and some of the lessons climbing for so long has taught me…

I hope you find the message helpful.

I see a person climbing a ladder propped up against a huge fence. As she reaches the top of the fence and peers over the edge, she is quite disappointed. Instead of seeing a beautiful landscape with endless possibilities, what she sees is barren and dry. She sees dust balls blowing around, falling buildings, and a whole lot of nothingness.

I watch her shrug her shoulders and move on to another, even higher, ladder to climb. She's wondering what she'll see when she gets to the top. And when she reaches the top - the same results, but even more disappointing. Again and again, one ladder after another, the same thing happens.

Finally, exhausted, worn out, anxiety-ridden, and depressed, she gives up. She can't go on and finds a tree to sit under and wallows there for a while. No ladder she's ever tried to climb gave her what she was looking for. No matter how intricate the ladder was, no matter how difficult or steep it was, always the same outcome. When she got to the top of a ladder she was disappointed and let down.

She felt pretty darn sorry for herself. She spent a lot of time in solitude; sobbing, wallowing, woe-is-me-ing. And then one day, a butterfly moved by her face and something about the butterfly caught her eye.

The next day, she was drinking fresh water from a beautiful clean stream she finally noticed. It was running right next to the tree that she was sitting under. She saw a bumblebee buzz by and followed it. The bee led her to some of the most beautiful flowers she could ever remember seeing. As she was admiring the flowers, she noticed a fruit tree and then some berry bushes nearby. How come she hadn't seen them before? The fruit tasted beautiful and while she was enjoying it, she noticed that one of her abandoned ladders was next to those trees. Curious. How hadn't she noticed the fruit and bushes before?

The next day, she started to meander further down the riverbed. As she was walking, she heard laughter. Laughter? It's been so long since she laughed, it sounded almost foreign to her. She followed the sound, and as she moved, she passed more fruit trees, plentiful streams, and waterfalls. As she got closer to the laughter, she noticed a flock of chickens. The chickens were happily clucking and producing eggs for all who needed their sustenance. Wow, she would savor those eggs for sure! How had she missed the chickens? As she admired the chicken coop, she noticed another one of her ladders right next to it. It made her think about what she was chasing that had kept her from noticing the beauty she was now discovering.

She came upon a village of people - working, singing, dancing, crying, rejoicing, sharing, caring, and just being with each other in the community. She was greeted with smiles, hugs, and handshakes -  gestures of sheer gratitude for her presence.

How had she missed this place? She looked around and noticed the ladders she had propped up all around the village. It was as if she wanted to get away from here.

“Why would she want to escape from this? This beautiful realness? What was it she was spending so much time climbing towards?”

She was offered a place to stay and spent the night in a comfortable bed. In the morning, she heard the birds chirping and excited children moving through the streets. She admired the clean clothes she had to change into, and after a hot shower, she walked into a kitchen full of delicious food.

She prepared herself a masterpiece of a meal and headed out to a picnic table filled with kind and loving people. These are the same people she tried to climb away from. It was at that moment she had a realization. No ladder anywhere could get her where she was now. She was overwhelmed with gratitude and joy.

Suddenly she felt regret. “Why did I waste all that time climbing ladders when I could have been here enjoying all of this?”

At that moment, a loving friend approached her and shared some important words. “Had you not climbed those ladders, seen with your own eyes, and felt with your own heart the let-down and discontent, you may not be here right now - in complete gratitude and joy of all you are blessed with. Don't be angry about the ladders. Rejoice in the journey and be utterly grateful for the perspective you now have. You have all you need and will ever want right now, so embrace it. Enjoy it and receive it with open arms, for you truly deserve it all.”

All is well in my world.

May I have the courage to be in the fire of what it takes to be who I really am.
