Have you ever found yourself frantically tidying up your home before company arrives?
If so, you’re not alone. If you walk into nearly any house, chances are that you’ll find an abundance of clutter. It may be lurking in a junk drawer, the attic, the basement, or in closets, any place where we can try to hide things. Even when things may appear clean on the outside, there is often clutter hidden throughout our homes, as we hold on to so many things we no longer need.
Clutter appears in a plethora of sneaky ways. At its core, clutter is anything that is no longer used or needed in your life and is taking up space within your home.
Clutter in your home may appear as:
Unused odds and ends in junk drawers
Expired foods, medications, or products taking up space in your cabinets
Closets so packed with “stuff,” that you struggle to find what you need
Unfinished projects that you no longer want to complete
Unused “stuff” under a bed, in the attic, or in your garage
Unmatched socks or clothes you no longer wear
Anything broken that has been set aside, waiting to be fixed
Books that no longer serve your needs or that you’ll never read again
Toys your kids have outgrown or no longer play with
Items from the past that prevent you from moving forward (letters or gifts from previous relationships, memorabilia from a past career, etc.)
Paperwork that you no longer need such as old tax forms or expired warranties
Digital clutter on your computer or phone that is taking up unnecessary storage space
The list goes on and on, and as we fill our homes with things we no longer use or need, this physical clutter blocks proper energy flow throughout our homes and creates a block within our lives.
Clutter creates a sense of stagnation in every area of the home where it appears, creating a sluggish vibe which mimics itself through your own energy. Clutter leaves us in a place of nostalgia, tethered to the past, unable to manifest new things and opportunities, while also creating frustration and chaos, which can negatively add to anyone’s anxiety, self-esteem, and energy levels.
In truth, the things we keep are SO MUCH MORE than just ‘things’.
They serve as subconscious reminders of our beliefs about ourselves and our lives.
Our belongings can reflect nostalgia in thoughts that life was so much better in the past, reminding us of those who are no longer in our lives. If we can’t get rid of things because we may need them one day, this reflects a scarcity mindset. Another common example is keeping clothing for a ‘someday’ scenario, such when we weigh or look a certain way, reflecting issues we may have with self-confidence.
From a Feng Shui perspective, depending on where your clutter is located, it can hinder your finances, career success, relationships and more. For example, if you have a lot of office clutter, you may not be able to move forward in your career or get the promotion you’ve been wanting. If you have a lot of memorabilia tied to previous relationships, you may be blocked in finding a new, loving relationship you desire. If you have so much of your stuff piled in your bedroom that there isn’t room for another person to even move in, this may hinder you attracting a relationship as well.
When you release yourself from clutter, it’s a service to yourself on a physical, mental, and emotional level.
Decluttering is such a powerful tool you can use to free yourself from the past and get rid of things that no longer serve you, so you can truly create a new beginning for yourself and your home.
